Plasmacytosis refers to an increase in the number of plasma cells in the blood or tissues. Plasma cells are a type of white blood cell that produce antibodies. While a normal number of plasma cells is essential for a healthy immune response, an abnormal proliferation can indicate an underlying medical condition.

One common cause of plasmacytosis is reactive plasmacytosis, which occurs in response to chronic inflammation or infection. In these cases, the increased plasma cells are part of the body's normal immune defense mechanism, working to fight off the persistent stimulus. Other causes can include autoimmune diseases, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues, leading to an overproduction of plasma cells.

A more serious cause of plasmacytosis is plasma cell myeloma, a type of cancer where cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow. This can lead to various complications, including bone damage, anemia, and kidney problems. Other less common conditions associated with plasmacytosis include certain viral infections and some rare blood disorders. Diagnosis often involves blood tests to count plasma cells and may require further investigations like bone marrow biopsy to determine the cause and extent of the condition. Treatment strategies vary widely depending on the underlying cause, ranging from managing chronic inflammation to specific therapies for plasma cell myeloma.
