Piperonyl refers to a chemical substituent group derived from piperonal, also known as heliotropin. The piperonyl group consists of a 1,3-benzodioxole (methylenedioxyphenyl) ring that is bound to the rest of the molecule, typically through a carbon atom on the ring. The name is used in various organic compounds, often as part of a larger ether or ester.

Among the best-known piperonyl-containing compounds is piperonyl butoxide (PBO), a pesticide synergist used with pyrethrins and other insecticides. PBO itself has little pesticidal activity but inhibits insect detoxification enzymes such as cytochrome P450s, extending the activity of co-applied insecticides. Because of this role, PBO is frequently formulated as part of public health and crop-protection products and is subject to regulatory review.

Piperonyl groups appear in other chemical contexts, including fragrance and flavor ingredients, where the benzodioxole ring contributes to aroma profiles. In synthetic chemistry, piperonyl substituents are used to tune electronic properties of aromatic systems.

Safety considerations: compounds containing benzodioxole rings may be irritants; regulatory status depends on the specific compound and jurisdiction. Piperonyl butoxide is evaluated for human and environmental safety; products using PBO must comply with pesticide regulations.
