Pimesoolepõletik, more commonly known as appendicitis, is an inflammation of the appendix, a small, finger-shaped pouch attached to the large intestine. The exact function of the appendix is not fully understood, but it is believed to play a role in the immune system and harbor beneficial gut bacteria.

The cause of appendicitis is usually a blockage in the appendix, which can be due to hardened stool, foreign objects, or infection. This blockage leads to a buildup of pressure and bacteria, causing the appendix to become inflamed and infected. If left untreated, the appendix can rupture, leading to a serious infection of the abdominal cavity called peritonitis.

Symptoms of appendicitis typically begin with abdominal pain that starts near the navel and then moves to the lower right side of the abdomen. This pain often worsens with movement, coughing, or sneezing. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fever, and abdominal swelling. However, symptoms can vary, and not everyone experiences them in the same way.

Diagnosis of appendicitis usually involves a physical examination, blood tests to check for signs of infection, and imaging tests such as an ultrasound or CT scan. The standard treatment for appendicitis is surgical removal of the appendix, a procedure known as an appendectomy. This can be performed either through open surgery or minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications like rupture and peritonitis.
