Pillagers are a hostile mob introduced in the Java Edition update 1.14 and the Bedrock Edition update 1.16. They are a variant of illagers, distinct from villagers, and are primarily found in illager patrols and outposts.

Pillagers are characterized by their crossbows and their aggressive nature towards players and villagers. They spawn in illager patrols, which can appear in the world while a player is adventuring. If a player defeats a patrol leader, they may gain the "Bad Omen" status effect, which causes a raid to spawn when the player enters a village. Pillagers are also the primary inhabitants of pillager outposts, large structures found in various biomes that serve as their bases.

When attacking, pillagers will typically keep their distance, using their crossbows to fire arrows. They are a significant threat in numbers and can be particularly dangerous when combined with other illager mobs. Defeating pillagers can yield various items, including arrows, crossbows, and sometimes emeralds. They are a key element of the game's combat and exploration mechanics, often acting as obstacles or challenges for players.
