Piezozerstäubung, also known as piezoelectric atomization or ultrasonic atomization, is a method used to convert a liquid into a fine spray of droplets. This process utilizes the piezoelectric effect, where certain materials deform when an electric voltage is applied. In the context of atomization, a piezoelectric transducer, typically a ceramic element, is vibrated at a high frequency. This vibration is transmitted to the liquid surface contained within or in contact with the transducer.

The rapid oscillations of the transducer cause the liquid surface to bulge and break apart into very small droplets. The size of these droplets can be precisely controlled by adjusting the frequency of the applied voltage and the characteristics of the piezoelectric material and the liquid.
