piebalga

Piebalga is a historical region in what is now Latvia, situated in the eastern part of the country. Its territory largely correlates with the current administrative boundaries of Valmiera Municipality and parts of the surrounding local governments of Cēsis and Valga.

The name "Piebalga" is derived from the Livonian language and is an adjective, "piebalgas", meaning "among the slopes" in reference to the hilly terrain of the area. The region has been inhabited by the Semigallians, a Balto-Finnic tribe, and has been part of various neighboring powers and states.

Throughout history, Piebalga has featured sites of regional importance. Notable examples include the Old Piebalga Castle, a medieval fortress likely dating to the 13th century, although archaeological excavations were conducted in the 1930s and the site has been object of speculation regarding archaeologists regarding its style. The area's landscape consists of parts of the Gauja River and the territory features water resources areas used during the irrigation canals.
