Piackereskedés, also known as market making, is a financial activity where participants, known as market makers, quote both a buy and a sell price for a particular security or asset. Their primary goal is to provide liquidity to the market by being ready to buy from sellers and sell to buyers at their quoted prices. This constant availability of buy and sell orders helps to narrow the spread between the highest bid price and the lowest ask price, making it easier for other traders to execute their transactions.

Market makers profit from the difference between the buy and sell prices, known as the bid-ask spread. They take on the risk of holding inventory of the asset, hoping to buy low and sell high. For example, a market maker for a stock might quote a bid price of $10.00 and an ask price of $10.05. If a buyer is willing to pay $10.05 and a seller is willing to accept $10.00, the market maker can buy from the seller at $10.00 and sell to the buyer at $10.05, pocketing the $0.05 difference.

This function is crucial for the smooth operation of financial markets. Without market makers, trading volumes could be lower, and price discovery might be less efficient, as it could take longer to find a counterparty for a trade. Market making is undertaken by various entities, including investment banks, brokerage firms, and specialized trading houses.
