Phrasebuilding, also called phrase building, refers to the process by which words are combined to form phrases—functional units of syntax such as noun phrases, verb phrases, or prepositional phrases. It is a central concept in linguistics, language education, and computational language processing, and it describes how language users assemble meaningful units from smaller elements.

In theoretical linguistics, phrase-building is described by phrase-structure rules or grammar. These rules specify how tokens combine to yield larger constituents, often in a hierarchical tree. For example, a noun phrase may consist of a determiner, optional adjectives, and a noun; a verb phrase includes a verb possibly followed by a noun phrase.

In language teaching, phrase-building exercises develop learners' ability to produce accurate and fluent sentences. Techniques include chunking, frames, and lexical bundles, where learners rehearse common phrase units and then integrate them into new sentences.

In computational linguistics, phrase-building underlies parsing and generation. Constituency parsers construct phrase-structure trees from sentences; phrase-building rules enable text generation and machine translation. Phrase-based models focus on sequences of words, while structured phrase-building emphasizes syntactic constituents.
