Phospholipase is a group of enzymes that hydrolyze phospholipids. For instance, PLA2 is implicated in inflammation, pain, and allergic reactions, as it releases arachidonic acid, a precursor to prostaglandins and leukotrienes. PLC plays a role in signal transduction pathways by generating second messengers like inositol trisphosphate and diacylglycerol, which regulate calcium levels and protein kinase C activity. PLD is involved in membrane trafficking and cellular responses to various stimuli. Dysregulation of phospholipase activity has been linked to various diseases, making them potential targets for therapeutic intervention.
