Phenomenaemergent, commonly called emergent phenomena, is a concept in science and philosophy describing properties or behaviors of a system that arise from the interactions among its parts and are not properties of any individual component. Emergent phenomena are typically studied in complex systems where simple local rules lead to rich global behavior.

A common distinction is between weak emergence and strong emergence. Weak emergence refers to outcomes that are in principle deducible or computable from lower-level rules, but which are difficult to predict without detailed simulation. Strong emergence posits properties or causal powers that cannot be reduced to, or predicted from, the microstructure alone.

Examples include phase transitions and magnetization in physics, flocking and swarming in biology, traffic patterns in transportation networks, and social phenomena such as economic markets or cultural norms. Life and consciousness are frequently discussed as emergent, though the degree of reducibility remains debated.

Methods for studying emergence include agent-based models, cellular automata, network theory, and statistical physics, complemented by empirical data. These approaches seek to understand how local interactions give rise to global structure and behavior.

Limitations and debates: emergent properties depend on system structure, rules, and scale; predictions are often probabilistic rather than deterministic. The concept is central in philosophy of science and cognitive science and remains a topic of discussion regarding reductionism and explanations at higher levels.
