Petrográfiával, often translated as petrography, is the branch of geology that deals with the systematic description and classification of rocks. It is a fundamental aspect of petrology, the broader study of rocks and their origins. Petrography primarily focuses on the microscopic examination of rocks, a technique known as petrography. This involves preparing thin sections of rocks, which are slices of rock ground down to a thickness of about 30 micrometers, and then observing them under a petrographic microscope.

The petrographic microscope uses polarized light to reveal the optical properties of the minerals within the rock. By analyzing these properties, such as color, cleavage, refractive index, and extinction angle, petrographers can identify the constituent minerals, determine their abundance, and understand their textural relationships. Texture refers to the size, shape, and arrangement of the mineral grains and other components within a rock.

Through petrographic analysis, geologists can infer a rock's origin, including its formation environment (e.g., igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic), the conditions under which it formed (temperature, pressure), and its subsequent geological history. This information is crucial for a wide range of geological investigations, including mineral exploration, understanding geological processes, and reconstructing Earth's history. While macroscopic examination is also important, petrography provides a level of detail essential for accurate rock identification and interpretation.
