Pesaro is a city and comune on the Adriatic coast in the Marche region of central Italy. It is the capital of the Province of Pesaro e Urbino and has a population of about 95,000. The city sits along the coast and has a long maritime and cultural heritage.

The area has ancient origins, initially inhabited by the Piceni and later incorporated into the Roman Empire as a municipium. In the Middle Ages it developed as a free comune and later saw the Della Rovere family establish the Palazzo Ducale, contributing to its Renaissance character and political importance in the region.

Pesaro is known for its cultural and musical traditions. The city center includes the Piazza del Popolo, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and the Rocca Costanza fortress, along with the Palazzo Ducale. The birthplace of Gioachino Rossini is preserved as Casa Rossini, and the Teatro Rossini hosts regular performances. The annual Rossini Opera Festival attracts audiences from around the world and is a major event in the Italian operatic calendar.

The city also functions as a seaside resort, with a popular district known as Lido di Pesaro that offers beaches, promenades, and cultural institutions such as museums and galleries. Pesaro is connected by the Adriatic railway line Rimini–Ancona and by the A14 motorway, linking it to major Italian cities and other regional destinations.
