Peruspohja is a Finnish term used across fields to denote an underlying base or reference framework. In mathematics and physics it refers to a standard or canonical basis that defines coordinates in a vector space. In civil engineering and geotechnical contexts it designates the substrate or bottom layer on which a structure rests, i.e., the foundation’s bearing surface. The term highlights the role of a base layer that conditions subsequent representations or constructions.

In mathematics, peruspohja often means the standard basis of a finite-dimensional vector space. For example, in R^n the peruspohja consists of the unit vectors e1, e2, ..., en. Every vector x can be written uniquely as a linear combination of these basis vectors, x = sum x_i e_i, with x_i being the coordinates of x relative to the peruspohja. This basis also determines how linear transformations are represented by matrices and how coordinates are manipulated.

In civil engineering, the peruspohja (substrate) is the soil or rock layer that supports a foundation. Its properties—bearing capacity, compressibility, moisture content, and depth—significantly influence design decisions, settlements, and stability.
