Peroxys is a term that can refer to several different chemical concepts, primarily relating to oxygen-containing functional groups. In organic chemistry, the term "peroxy" often describes the presence of a peroxide functional group, which consists of a single oxygen-oxygen bond (O-O). This bond is relatively weak and can readily undergo homolytic cleavage, leading to the formation of highly reactive radicals. Compounds containing this group are known as organic peroxides.

Organic peroxides are widely used as initiators in polymerization reactions, such as the production of polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride. They are also employed as bleaching agents, curing agents for resins, and in the synthesis of various organic compounds. Due to their inherent instability, organic peroxides can be hazardous and require careful handling and storage to prevent uncontrolled decomposition, which can lead to fires or explosions.

In inorganic chemistry, "peroxy" can also be used to denote the presence of peroxy anions, such as the peroxydisulfate ion (S2O8^2-). These species also contain an oxygen-oxygen single bond. Peroxydisulfates are strong oxidizing agents and are used in various industrial applications, including etching in electronics manufacturing and as bleaching agents in detergents.

Another related concept is the peroxy acid, which contains both a carbonyl group and a peroxide group (-COOOH). Peroxy acids are also potent oxidizers and are used in organic synthesis, for instance, in the epoxidation of alkenes or the Baeyer-Villiger oxidation. The reactivity of peroxy compounds stems from the inherent weakness of the O-O bond and the electron-withdrawing nature of adjacent atoms.
