Permanentformstøping, also known as permanent mold casting, is a metal casting process where molten metal is poured into a reusable mold, typically made of metal, and allowed to solidify. This is in contrast to sand casting, where the mold is destroyed after each use. The molds used in permanent mold casting are typically made from iron or steel and are designed to be durable enough to withstand multiple casting cycles.

The process begins with the preparation of the permanent mold. The mold is usually preheated to a specific temperature to prevent thermal shock and improve metal flow. The mold cavity is then coated with a refractory wash to prevent the molten metal from sticking and to facilitate easy removal of the casting. Once prepared, the mold is closed and clamped shut. Molten metal, such as aluminum, magnesium, zinc, or copper alloys, is then poured into the mold cavity, often under gravity or sometimes with the aid of centrifugal force or low pressure.

After the metal has solidified, the mold is opened, and the casting is removed. The cycle can then be repeated. Permanent mold casting is known for producing castings with good surface finish, tight dimensional tolerances, and improved mechanical properties compared to sand casting, due to the faster cooling rate of the metal. This process is well-suited for high-volume production of parts that do not require extremely complex internal geometries. Applications include automotive components, engine blocks, cylinder heads, and various consumer goods.
