Peritoneal dialysis is a medical treatment for kidney failure where the peritoneum is used as a natural filter to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood. Tumors can also develop within the peritoneum, such as peritoneal carcinomatosis, which is the spread of cancer to the peritoneal lining. Understanding the structure and function of the peritoneum is crucial for diagnosing and managing a wide range of abdominal diseases.
