The periodontium is the specialized group of tissues that surround and support the teeth. It is comprised of four principal components: the gingiva, the periodontal ligament, the alveolar bone, and the cementum. The gingiva, commonly known as the gums, is the soft tissue that covers the alveolar bone and encircles the necks of the teeth. It plays a crucial role in protecting the underlying structures from the oral environment.

The periodontal ligament (PDL) is a fibrous connective tissue that attaches the cementum of the tooth root to the alveolar bone. It acts as a shock absorber, cushioning the tooth against occlusal forces, and also contains blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels that nourish and innervate the surrounding tissues. The PDL is essential for proprioception, allowing us to sense the pressure and position of our teeth.

The alveolar bone is the part of the jawbone that forms the tooth sockets. It provides the structural support for the teeth and is constantly being remodeled in response to mechanical forces. The cementum is a hard, calcified tissue that covers the root of the tooth, below the enamel. It serves as the attachment site for the fibers of the periodontal ligament. Together, these components form a functional unit that maintains the stability and health of the teeth within the jaw. Diseases affecting the periodontium, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, can lead to inflammation, tissue destruction, and eventually tooth loss if left untreated.
