Perintöomaisuus refers to the assets and liabilities that a deceased person leaves behind, which are then passed on to their heirs. Alongside assets, perintöomaisuus also includes any debts and obligations the deceased may have had. These can include mortgages, loans, unpaid bills, and taxes. Heirs are generally responsible for settling these debts from the inherited estate before they can fully take possession of the remaining assets. The principle is that the estate itself is liable for the deceased's debts, and the heirs inherit the net value after these obligations are met.

The process of transferring perintöomaisuus to the heirs is known as inheritance or estate settlement, or "perunkirjoitus" in Finnish. This involves inventorying all the assets and liabilities, determining the heirs, and distributing the net estate according to the deceased's will or the laws of intestacy. Finnish law dictates how the estate is divided if there is no valid will. The inheritance process aims to ensure a fair and orderly transfer of property and to resolve any outstanding financial matters of the deceased.
