periféreies

Periféreies is a Greek term that translates to "peripheries" or "regions." In a geographical and administrative context, it refers to the administrative regions of Greece. These are the highest-level administrative divisions within the country and are established by the country's constitution. Greece is divided into thirteen periféreies, each with its own decentralized administration headed by a governor. These regions were established to decentralize power and provide more localized governance.

The thirteen periféreies are: Attica, Central Greece, Central Macedonia, Crete, East Macedonia and Thrace, Epirus, Ionian Islands, North Aegean, Peloponnese, South Aegean, Thessaly, West Greece, and West Macedonia. Each periféreia encompasses several regional units, which are subdivisions of the periféreia. These regional units further break down into municipalities and communities. The role of the periféreia is to oversee regional development, environmental protection, public health, and other public services within its jurisdiction. While the central government retains ultimate authority, the periféreies play a significant role in implementing policies and managing local affairs, contributing to the complex administrative structure of modern Greece.
