Perfoliare, or perfoliate, is a botanical term describing a leaf state in which the leaf blade encircles the stem, appearing to perforate around it. The term derives from Latin roots meaning through (per) and leaf (folium). In plants with perfoliate leaves, the stem may pass through a circular or shield-like leaf, and in some cases two opposite leaves fuse at their bases to form a continuous ring around the stem.
