Perceptualism is a philosophical view that emphasizes the role of perception in knowledge and experience. It suggests that our understanding of the world is primarily, or even exclusively, derived from our sensory input. Perceptualists believe that the way we perceive objects and phenomena is fundamental to what we can know about them. Different forms of perceptualism exist, with some arguing that all knowledge originates from perception, while others hold that perception is the most reliable or foundational source of knowledge.

This viewpoint contrasts with other epistemological theories that may emphasize reason, innate ideas, or the testimony of others as primary sources of knowledge. Perceptualism often grapples with questions about the reliability of our senses, the nature of perceptual illusions, and how to account for abstract concepts or knowledge that doesn't seem to be directly tied to sensory experience. Proponents might argue that even abstract concepts are ultimately grounded in or derived from perceptual experiences, perhaps through processes of generalization or analogy. The strength of perceptualism lies in its intuitive appeal, as much of our everyday knowledge is indeed acquired through seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and smelling. However, its limitations become apparent when considering complex scientific theories or mathematical truths that are not easily reducible to direct sensory observation.
