Pentose-containing is an adjective used in chemistry and biology to describe compounds that include a pentose sugar, a five-carbon monosaccharide, as part of their structure. Pentoses can be classified as aldoses or ketoses; common examples include aldopentoses such as ribose and arabinose, and ketopentoses such as xylulose and ribulose.

In biology, pentose-containing molecules play central roles in genetics and metabolism. Nucleotides—the building blocks of nucleic acids—consist of a pentose sugar (ribose in RNA, deoxyribose in DNA) bonded to a nucleobase and one or more phosphate groups. The pentose sugar backbone enables the formation of the characteristic 3' to 5' phosphodiester chains that encode genetic information. Chemically, pentoses can form cyclic structures known as furanose and pyranose forms, depending on how the sugar cyclizes. Deoxyribose, the sugar in DNA, is distinguished by the absence of a hydroxyl group at the 2' position, contributing to DNA's stability relative to RNA.

Pentose-containing compounds are also encountered in plant polysaccharides and biomass, where pentose sugars such as xylose are components of hemicelluloses. In biochemistry and molecular biology, recognizing pentose-containing structures helps explain the architecture of nucleic acids, ribonucleoproteins, and various cofactors that rely on ribose or related sugars.
