Peilittömän is a Finnish word that translates to "mirrorless" in English. It is most commonly used in the context of photography, referring to mirrorless cameras. These cameras represent a significant evolution from traditional digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras.

Unlike DSLRs, mirrorless cameras do not have a reflex mirror system. In a DSLR, a mirror is positioned behind the lens to reflect light up into a prism and then out through the optical viewfinder. When the shutter button is pressed, the mirror flips up, allowing light to hit the image sensor. Mirrorless cameras, as their name suggests, omit this mirror.

The absence of the mirror allows for several key design differences. Mirrorless cameras are generally smaller, lighter, and more compact than DSLRs. They also typically utilize an electronic viewfinder (EVF) or the rear LCD screen as the primary way to compose an image. The EVF displays a live feed directly from the image sensor, offering benefits such as displaying exposure simulation and digital zoom. This also means that the photographer sees what the sensor sees, which can be an advantage for accurate exposure and white balance preview.

The technology behind mirrorless cameras has advanced rapidly, allowing them to offer features comparable to or even exceeding those of DSLRs, including high-resolution sensors, fast autofocus systems, and sophisticated video recording capabilities. This has led to their increasing popularity among both amateur and professional photographers.
