Peilittömiin, meaning "mirrorless" in Finnish, refers to a category of digital cameras that have become increasingly popular. Unlike traditional DSLR cameras, mirrorless cameras do not feature a reflex mirror system. This absence of a mirror allows for a more compact and lighter camera body.

In a DSLR, a mirror directs light from the lens up to a pentaprism and then to the optical viewfinder. When the shutter button is pressed, the mirror flips up, allowing light to reach the image sensor. Mirrorless cameras, on the other hand, use the image sensor to capture light directly. The live view from the sensor is then displayed on either an electronic viewfinder (EVF) or the rear LCD screen.

This design eliminates the need for a bulky mirror box and pentaprism, resulting in smaller and often more aesthetically pleasing camera bodies. Mirrorless cameras can also achieve faster continuous shooting speeds and offer advanced video recording capabilities, as the sensor is always exposed to light. They utilize various autofocus systems, including phase detection and contrast detection, often integrated directly onto the image sensor. The interchangeable lens system is also a key feature of many mirrorless cameras, offering a wide range of photographic possibilities.
