pedpokládat

Pedpokládat is a nonstandard or erroneous form found occasionally in Czech texts. It is not recognized as a correct Czech verb in standard dictionaries or reference works. The correct verb is předpokládat, meaning to assume, suppose, or presuppose.

Standard Czech verbs are formed with the prefix před- attached to pokládat (to place, set). The sequence ped- does not occur as a productive morpheme in this word, and pedpokládat is generally considered a misspelling or typographical error rather than a separate lexical item.

When it appears, pedpokládat should be corrected to předpokládat in formal writing. The meaning is the same as předpokládat: to assume or presuppose a premise or likelihood. It is used with clauses introduced by že, or with imperative forms: "Předpokládejme, že bude fungovat." or "Nemůžu předpokládat, že to bude levné." In terms of nuance, předpokládat can express a probability or provisional assumption, while synonyms include domnívat se (to suppose, to think) and usuzovat (to infer).
