pedosfeer

The pedosfeer, or pedosphere, is the outermost sphere of the Earth in contact with the atmosphere and lithosphere, consisting of soils and the organic matter that forms within and on top of them. It integrates the biological, chemical, and physical processes that shape the land surface. Pedogenesis is the process of soil formation influenced by climate, organisms, relief, parent material, and time (the CLORPT factors).

Composition and structure: soils are a mixture of mineral particles, organic matter, water, and air; they develop distinct horizons (O, A, E, B, C) and exhibit properties such as texture, structure, porosity, water holding capacity, pH, and nutrient content.

Role and interactions: the pedosphere acts as a crucial interface: it stores and filters water, provides nutrients for plants, and hosts diverse microbial and mesofaunal communities; exchanges carbon between land and atmosphere; interacts with the lithosphere through weathering; with the hydrosphere via infiltration, runoff, and groundwater recharge; with the biosphere through root uptake and organic matter input.

Importance and human context: soil health underpins agricultural productivity, water quality, and climate regulation through carbon sequestration; soil erosion, pollution, and salinization threaten functionality. Management practices include conservation tillage, agroforestry, soil amendments, and sustainable land use.

Classification and study: pedons or soil profiles are described in soil surveys; classifications systems such as FAO's World Reference Base for Soil Resources and the USDA Soil Taxonomy organize soils by properties and formation processes.
