pedosfeer
The pedosfeer, or pedosphere, is the outermost sphere of the Earth in contact with the atmosphere and lithosphere, consisting of soils and the organic matter that forms within and on top of them. It integrates the biological, chemical, and physical processes that shape the land surface. Pedogenesis is the process of soil formation influenced by climate, organisms, relief, parent material, and time (the CLORPT factors).
Composition and structure: soils are a mixture of mineral particles, organic matter, water, and air; they develop
Role and interactions: the pedosphere acts as a crucial interface: it stores and filters water, provides nutrients
Importance and human context: soil health underpins agricultural productivity, water quality, and climate regulation through carbon
Classification and study: pedons or soil profiles are described in soil surveys; classifications systems such as
