Pavloviano is the adjective used to describe processes, experiments, or phenomena related to Pavlovian conditioning, also known as classical conditioning. It refers to a learning mechanism in which a neutral stimulus becomes associated with a naturally occurring stimulus that elicits a reflexive response, such that the neutral stimulus itself comes to elicit a similar response.

Core mechanism: before conditioning, an unconditioned stimulus (US) naturally elicits an unconditioned response (UR). A neutral stimulus (CS) is paired with the US; after repeated pairings, the CS becomes capable of eliciting a conditioned response (CR) by itself. Key processes include acquisition (learning the association), extinction (diminishing the CR when the CS is presented without the US), spontaneous recovery, generalization (CR to similar stimuli), and discrimination (distinguishing between similar stimuli). Higher-order conditioning can occur when a new stimulus is paired with the CS.
