Pattitilanne means a standstill or deadlock. It is used in Finnish to describe a situation in which no side can gain an advantage or make progress, whether in games, negotiations, or decision-making processes.

In chess, pattitilanne is the term for a stalemate: the player to move has no legal moves and their king is not in check; the game ends in a draw. This differs from checkmate, where the king is in check and has no legal escape. Stalemate requires careful planning to avoid or to force, depending on which side one is on.

In politics or business, pattitilanne describes a negotiation deadlock: parties maintain incompatible positions, deadlines loom, and no agreement can be reached under current terms. Consequences can include legislative paralysis, delayed budgets, or stalled projects. Causes include divergent red lines, institutional constraints, or external pressures.
