Patognomon is a term used in medicine and diagnostics, derived from Greek words meaning "suffering" and "knowing." It refers to a sign or symptom that is characteristic or pathognomonic of a particular disease. A pathognomonic sign is one that, when present, definitively indicates the presence of a specific disease, and when absent, rules out that disease.
