Patenttilainsäädäntö refers to the system of laws and regulations that govern the granting, enforcement, and maintenance of patents. In Finland, this system is primarily governed by the Patent Act (78/2007) and the European Patent Convention.

The purpose of patenttilainsäädäntö is to provide a framework for inventors and innovators to protect their intellectual property rights and encourage innovation and technological progress. The system allows individuals and organizations to file patent applications to secure exclusive rights to their inventions and advancements.

To qualify for a patent, an invention must meet certain criteria, including novelty, inventiveness, and industrial applicability. The invention must also be described in a manner that meets the requirements of the patent application. If the application is deemed acceptable, the patent office will conduct an examination to determine whether the invention meets the necessary criteria.

Upon successful registration, the inventor or patent holder gains exclusive rights to the invention, which provides a monopoly on the manufacture, use, and sale of the invention for a period of time (typically 20 years from the date of application). Patenttilainsäädäntö also establishes procedures for enforcing patent rights, including litigation and arbitration.

The European Patent Convention has harmonized patent law across European countries, including Finland. This has simplified the process for patent holders and applicants by standardizing procedures and requirements across member states. In Finland, the patent office is responsible for administering the patent system, including the examination of patent applications and the grant of patents.
