A partíció, or partition, in computing refers to a logical division of a physical storage device, such as a hard drive or solid-state drive. Each partition is treated by the operating system as a separate storage volume, allowing for the organization and management of data. This separation can serve multiple purposes, including installing different operating systems on the same drive, isolating user data from system files, or improving performance by placing frequently accessed data on faster storage areas.

When a storage device is initialized, it is typically divided into one or more partitions using a partition table. Common partitioning schemes include the Master Boot Record (MBR) and the GUID Partition Table (GPT). MBR is an older scheme with limitations on the number and size of partitions it can support, while GPT is a more modern and flexible standard.

The process of creating, deleting, and resizing partitions is managed through disk management utilities provided by the operating system, such as Disk Management in Windows or Disk Utility in macOS. These tools allow users to configure their storage space according to their needs. For example, a user might create a separate partition for their operating system and another for their personal files, or dedicate a partition to a specific application that requires a unique file system format.
