Partiklen is the Danish definite form of the noun partikel, meaning a small localized constituent of matter or a quantum of energy. In everyday language it can refer to any tiny object, but in a scientific context it denotes a particle, whether elementary or composite, that can be described by the laws of physics.

In physics, particles are understood as localized excitations, or carriers of quantized properties. They can be elementary, such as quarks and leptons, which are not known to be composed of smaller parts, or composite, such as protons and neutrons, which are bound states of quarks held together by gluons. Particles carry intrinsic properties like mass, electric charge, and spin, and they interact via fundamental forces: electromagnetism, the strong and weak nuclear forces, and, in principle, gravity.

Elementary particles fall into two broad classes: fermions, which make up matter (quarks and leptons), and bosons, which mediate forces (photons, gluons, W and Z bosons, the Higgs boson). Some particles are massless (such as the photon) while others have mass due to mechanisms like the Higgs field.

Composite particles include hadrons (such as protons and neutrons) and, on larger scales, atoms and molecules. The study of particles is the domain of particle physics and quantum field theory, with the Standard Model describing the known elementary particles and their interactions, and ongoing research exploring physics beyond the Standard Model.

Partiklen is thus a generic term covering a wide range of objects studied in physics, from fundamental quanta to complex bound states, and remains central to understanding matter and energy in the universe.
