Parotidirauhaselle refers to the parotid gland in Finnish. The parotid glands are the largest of the salivary glands and are located on either side of the face, just in front of the ears. They produce saliva, which is essential for digestion, lubrication of the mouth, and oral hygiene. Saliva contains enzymes that begin the breakdown of carbohydrates and fats, and also helps to neutralize acids produced by bacteria in the mouth.

The parotid glands are composed of acini, which are clusters of secretory cells, and a duct system that transports saliva to the mouth. The main duct of the parotid gland, known as Stensen's duct, empties into the mouth near the upper molars. The glands are innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve (cranial nerve IX), which controls their secretion.

Several conditions can affect the parotid glands. Infections, such as mumps, are a common cause of parotid gland swelling. Tumors, both benign and malignant, can also develop in these glands, leading to enlargement and discomfort. Other issues include salivary stones, which can block the salivary ducts, and autoimmune conditions like Sjogren's syndrome, which can cause dry mouth due to reduced salivary production. Medical attention is generally sought for persistent swelling, pain, or changes in salivary flow.
