The term is derived from the Greek prefix "para-" meaning "beside" or "alongside," and "cellular" relating to cells. In biological contexts, paracellulære processes often describe how cells influence their immediate neighbors, distinct from autocrine signaling (acting on oneself) or endocrine signaling (acting on distant cells via the bloodstream).
