A papermaker is a worker who operates equipment to convert cellulose fibers into sheets of paper. In modern industry, papemakers may supervise or operate paper machines in mills; in artisanal settings, they may handcraft sheets through traditional techniques.

The core task is stock preparation and formation: controlling the furnish, refining and beating fibers, and managing additives; running the paper machine through the forming, pressing, drying, and calendering stages to achieve the desired basis weight, surface properties, and strength. Quality control, process optimization, and safety are ongoing responsibilities.

Historically, papermaking originated in China and spread to the Islamic world and Europe, evolving from manual processes to automated production during the Industrial Revolution. Modern papermaking emphasizes efficiency, consistency, and environmental management, including recycling and water treatment and the use of recycled fibers where appropriate.

Key skills include knowledge of fiber properties, chemical additives, machine instrumentation, and maintenance; the ability to read quality metrics and adjust furnishes accordingly; and safe operation of high-temperature dryers and moving equipment. Papermakers must coordinate with maintenance, quality, and production teams to minimize downtime and defects.

Papers produced vary from printing and packaging grades to specialty papers for art, conservation, and technical uses. The field faces environmental considerations such as water use, energy consumption, and effluent control, and it supports industries ranging from publishing to packaging to artisanal papermaking.
