Paperinkierrätys, or paper recycling, is the process of collecting and reprocessing waste paper products into new paper-based items. This practice plays a crucial role in environmental conservation by reducing the need to harvest virgin timber, saving energy, and decreasing landfill waste. The process typically begins with the collection of used paper from households and businesses. This collected material is then transported to recycling facilities.

At the recycling plant, the paper undergoes several stages. It is first sorted to remove contaminants like plastic, metal, and other non-paper materials. Following sorting, the paper is pulped, breaking it down into its fibrous components with water and sometimes chemicals. This pulp is then cleaned to remove any remaining impurities. The cleaned pulp can then be used to create a variety of new paper products, including newspapers, cardboard, writing paper, and tissue paper.

The environmental benefits of paperinkierrätys are substantial. Recycling a ton of paper can save approximately 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, and significant amounts of energy compared to producing paper from virgin wood. It also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with paper production and landfill decomposition.
