Palív is a term used in several Central European languages to denote fuels—substances that release usable energy through chemical or nuclear reactions. Fuels power engines, heat buildings, and generate electricity, and they can exist in solid, liquid, or gaseous form. They are selected for energy density, ease of handling, and compatibility with existing infrastructure.

Major categories include fossil fuels (coal, crude oil and refined products, natural gas), which have historically dominated energy supply; biofuels derived from biomass (ethanol, biodiesel, biogas) used to reduce dependence on fossil sources; and nuclear fuels (such as uranium oxide) used in reactors to produce heat for electricity generation. Synthetic fuels produced by chemical processes and hydrogen as an energy carrier are also part of contemporary discussions about future energy systems. While electricity is closely related as an energy carrier, it is not a fuel in the traditional sense.

Production and supply involve exploration and extraction for natural resources, refining or processing to meet quality standards, and transportation through pipelines, ships, or trucks to end users. Storage facilities, distribution networks, and regulatory requirements ensure safe handling, performance, and compatibility with engines and heating equipment. Fuel quality is governed by specifications related to energy content, impurities, and emissions performance.

Environmental and policy considerations emphasize the climate and health impacts of burning fuels, particularly fossil fuels, which release greenhouse gases and pollutants. Many jurisdictions promote efficiency improvements, lower-emission or renewable fuels, and transitioning to alternative energy sources.
