Palveluala, or the service sector, is the part of the economy that produces services rather than tangible goods. In Finnish statistical terminology it corresponds to the tertiary sector and includes broad categories such as commerce and retail, hospitality and food service, transportation and storage, information and communication, financial and insurance activities, real estate activities, professional, scientific and technical activities, administrative and support service activities, as well as education, health and social work.

Subsectors within the palveluala range from everyday consumer services to business services and public services. The sector is dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises and employs a large share of the workforce. Productivity levels vary widely between subsectors, with highly automated or scalable services often more productive than labor-intensive ones. Service quality, customer experience, and digital capabilities are increasingly important competitive factors.

In Finland and other developed economies, the service sector accounts for a large portion of GDP and employment. Its growth is driven by domestic demand, digitalization, services trade, and tourism. The structure of the palveluala is evolving as new business models emerge, such as platform-based services and remote services, influencing how jobs are created and organized.
