Palloni are the plural form of pallone, an Italian term for large balls used in various sports and games. The word derives from palla, meaning ball, and is related to similar terms in other Romance languages. In common Italian usage, pallone denotes a large sphere used as equipment for organized games, whereas a smaller ball used in casual contexts is usually referred to as una palla.

Palloni come in many sizes and weights, chosen to suit the sport and players’ ages. For example, those used in calcio (soccer), basket (basketball), pallavolo (volleyball), and rugby belong to different standard ranges and are regulated by sport federations. The outer surface is typically made of synthetic leather or treated leather, or polyurethane in modern balls. The outer panels are stitched together or thermally bonded, and the interior bladder is made of latex or butyl to retain air. Balls are inflated to prescribed pressures depending on the sport.

Manufacturing emphasizes durability, grip, and ballistics, with variations in panel shape, color, and valve design.
