Palkeiden, also known as "eyelashes," are the fine, curved hairs that grow along the edges of the eyelids. They are a common feature in mammals, including humans. The primary function of eyelashes is to protect the eyes from foreign particles, such as dust, debris, and small insects. They act as a physical barrier, catching these particles before they can reach the delicate surface of the eyeball.

When a foreign object comes into contact with an eyelash, it triggers a blink reflex, which helps to sweep the particle away from the eye. Eyelashes also play a role in regulating airflow over the eye's surface. By creating a slight turbulence, they can reduce the amount of wind that directly hits the eye, thus helping to prevent excessive evaporation of the tear film, which keeps the eye moist.

The appearance and length of eyelashes can vary significantly between individuals and species. Factors such as genetics, hormones, and age can influence eyelash growth and thickness. In some cultures, long and full eyelashes are considered aesthetically pleasing. While generally having a protective role, eyelashes themselves can also be affected by irritants or certain medical conditions, sometimes leading to loss or changes in their appearance.
