Paleoklimattilähteitä are natural archives that preserve information about past climates. These sources allow scientists to reconstruct Earth's climate history over long timescales, extending back millions of years. Different types of paleoclimate sources provide unique insights into various aspects of past climates, such as temperature, precipitation, atmospheric composition, and even the presence of ice sheets.

Ice cores are one of the most valuable paleoclimate sources. Drilled from glaciers and ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica, they contain trapped air bubbles that reveal past atmospheric composition, including greenhouse gas concentrations. The isotopic composition of the ice itself provides information about past temperatures. Tree rings, or dendrochronology, offer a more recent climate record, typically spanning hundreds to a few thousand years. The width and density of tree rings are influenced by temperature and moisture availability, allowing for the reconstruction of regional climate patterns.

Sedimentary rocks, particularly those found in ocean floor cores, lake beds, and terrestrial deposits, also hold important climate information. Microscopic fossils of marine organisms, such as foraminifera, record ocean temperatures and salinity. The chemical composition of sediments and the types of pollen preserved within them can indicate past vegetation, atmospheric conditions, and environmental changes. Other paleoclimate sources include corals, speleothems (cave formations like stalagmites and stalactites), and historical documents. Each of these sources, when analyzed and interpreted carefully, contributes to our understanding of Earth's dynamic climate system and its past fluctuations.
