Palenggvjimas is a lithographic method used in printing newspapers and other periodicals, particularly in Eastern Europe, mainly in the Baltic states and Russia. The term is derived from the Sami language, spoken in the northern parts of Scandinavia and the Kola Peninsula.

In Palenggvjimas, the printing plates are not created using traditional metal or stone blocks. Instead, a coated rubber plate is used, which is also known as a photopolymer plate or a ceramic xerographic (cerex) plate. This plate is fabricated through a photomechanical process, where a photo-sensitive layer is applied to the back of the rubber plate.

During the printing process, the plate is treated with chemicals and light to create an image on the rubber plate. The plate then goes through different developmental steps to produce a relief image. Each plate can be used multiple times with the remaining ink being replenished as needed.

The advantages of the Palenggvjimas process include lower costs, faster production rates and increased print quality compared to other methods like letterpress. However, it also has some drawbacks such as requirements of highly skilled technicians to operate, controlling the viscosity of inks used, limitations with complex color schemes and the use of coarse paper stock.

The use of Palenggvjimas has continued to evolve over the years as it has become possible for newspaper publishers to order pre-made plates that work on a mechanized press.
