Pakettivälitys, often translated as packet switching, is a fundamental method of data transmission in telecommunications and computer networks. Instead of establishing a dedicated, continuous circuit for communication, as in traditional circuit switching, packet switching breaks data into smaller units called packets. Each packet contains not only a portion of the data but also essential addressing information, such as the source and destination addresses, as well as sequence numbers to reassemble the data correctly at the receiving end.

These packets are then routed independently across the network. Routers, which are specialized network devices, examine the destination address of each packet and forward it along the most efficient path available at that moment. This means that different packets belonging to the same communication session might travel along entirely different routes through the network. This dynamic routing allows for efficient utilization of network resources because multiple users can share the same communication links concurrently.

The key advantages of packet switching include its flexibility, robustness, and cost-effectiveness. It is well-suited for bursty traffic, where data is transmitted in unpredictable intervals. If a particular path is congested or unavailable, packets can be rerouted, making the network more resilient to failures. The development of packet switching was a crucial step in the evolution of the internet and modern digital communication systems.
