A paisuntasäiliö, also known as an expansion tank or expansion vessel, is a crucial component in closed-loop heating and cooling systems. Its primary function is to accommodate the natural expansion and contraction of the fluid (typically water) within the system as its temperature changes. When the fluid heats up, it expands, increasing the pressure within the system. Without an expansion tank, this pressure increase could damage components like pipes, radiators, or the boiler/chiller itself. The expansion tank provides a safe space for this excess fluid to go, preventing over-pressurization. Conversely, when the fluid cools and contracts, the expansion tank releases fluid back into the system, maintaining a stable minimum pressure.

This is typically achieved through a diaphragm or bladder that divides the tank into two chambers. One chamber is connected to the heating/cooling system and contains the system fluid. The other chamber is pre-charged with air or nitrogen at a specific pressure. As the system fluid expands, it pushes against the diaphragm, compressing the air/nitrogen and increasing the volume of the fluid chamber. When the fluid contracts, the compressed air/nitrogen pushes the diaphragm back, forcing fluid back into the system. The size of the expansion tank is determined by factors such as the total volume of fluid in the system, the expected temperature range, and the desired operating pressure. Proper sizing and maintenance of an expansion tank are essential for the efficient and safe operation of any closed-loop thermal system.
