In naval architecture, ballast systems are crucial for maintaining the stability and trim of ships. Ships use ballast tanks, which can be filled with water or other heavy materials, to adjust their buoyancy and balance. This is particularly important when cargo is loaded or unloaded, or when the vessel encounters rough seas. By strategically filling or emptying ballast tanks, the ship's center of gravity can be precisely controlled, preventing capsizing and ensuring safe navigation.

In the context of transport, ballast is also used in railway construction. Railway ballast, typically consisting of crushed stone or gravel, serves multiple purposes. It provides a stable foundation for the tracks, supporting the sleepers (ties) and rails. It also helps to distribute the load from the train over a wider area of the subgrade, preventing settlement. Beyond ships and railways, ballast systems can be found in other applications. For instance, hot air balloons use ballast, often sand or water, to control their altitude. By releasing ballast, the balloon becomes lighter and ascends; by taking it on, it becomes heavier and descends. In construction, heavy weights are sometimes used as temporary ballast to secure structures or equipment during assembly or operation. The principle remains the same across these diverse applications: adding or removing mass to achieve a desired state of equilibrium or control.
