The term pHértéket, a Hungarian word, translates to "pH value" in English. It represents a scale used to specify the acidity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral. Solutions with a pH less than 7 are acidic, and the lower the pH, the stronger the acid. Solutions with a pH greater than 7 are alkaline (or basic), and the higher the pH, the stronger the alkali. The pH value is determined by the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in the solution. Specifically, pH is defined as the negative logarithm (base 10) of the hydrogen ion concentration: pH = -log10[H+]. A change of one pH unit represents a tenfold change in hydrogen ion concentration.
