Pääomaosuus, often translated as capital contribution or equity share, refers to the portion of capital that an individual or entity invests in a business venture. This investment can take various forms, including cash, assets, or even services, and it represents the owner's stake in the company. The value of the pääomaosuus determines the extent of ownership and the share of profits or losses the investor is entitled to.

In Finnish company law, pääomaosuus is a fundamental concept, particularly in limited liability companies (osakeyhtiö) and cooperatives (osuuskunta). For a limited liability company, the share capital is divided into shares (osakkeet), and each share represents a pääomaosuus. The total share capital is the sum of all these individual contributions. In cooperatives, membership is often acquired through a capital contribution, which grants the member certain rights and obligations, including a share in the cooperative's earnings, known as patronage refunds (ylijäämänpalautus).

The pääomaosuus is crucial for several reasons. It forms the financial foundation for the company's operations, enabling it to fund its activities, invest in growth, and manage its liabilities. It also serves as a measure of control and influence within the company; generally, a larger pääomaosuus equates to more voting rights and a greater say in decision-making processes. Furthermore, the pääomaosuus plays a role in determining how assets are distributed in the event of liquidation or dissolution of the company.
