An ozonator is a device that produces ozone gas. Ozone (O₃) is a molecule composed of three oxygen atoms. The electrical discharge, known as a corona discharge, breaks apart oxygen molecules (O₂) into individual oxygen atoms. These atoms then combine with other oxygen molecules to form ozone (O₃). UV ozonators use specific wavelengths of UV light to break down oxygen molecules, similar to the corona discharge method.

Ozone generated by ozonators is used for various purposes due to its strong oxidizing properties. It is effective at deodorizing, disinfecting, and purifying air and water. In air purification, ozonators can neutralize odors from smoke, pets, and mold, as well as kill airborne bacteria and viruses. In water treatment, ozone is used to disinfect water, remove impurities, and improve taste and odor.

However, ozone is also a powerful oxidant and can be harmful to living organisms at high concentrations. Inhaling ozone can irritate the respiratory system and exacerbate conditions like asthma. Therefore, ozonators should be used with caution, ensuring adequate ventilation and avoiding direct exposure to the ozone gas. The concentration of ozone produced and the duration of exposure are critical factors in determining its safety and effectiveness for a given application.
