Oxigéndiffúzió refers to the process by which oxygen moves from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. This is a fundamental principle in biology and chemistry, governing how gases are exchanged in living organisms and in various industrial processes.

In biological systems, oxigéndiffúzió is crucial for respiration. In animals, oxygen diffuses from the air in the lungs across the thin membranes of the alveoli into the bloodstream. Red blood cells then transport this oxygen to tissues throughout the body, where it diffuses from the blood into the cells to be used in cellular respiration. Conversely, carbon dioxide, a waste product of cellular respiration, diffuses from the cells into the blood and is transported back to the lungs to be exhaled.

In plants, oxigéndiffúzió occurs in the leaves through small pores called stomata. Oxygen produced during photosynthesis diffuses out of the leaf, and carbon dioxide needed for photosynthesis diffuses into the leaf. Oxygen also diffuses into plant roots from the soil.

The rate of oxigéndiffúzió is influenced by several factors, including the partial pressure gradient of the gas, the surface area available for diffusion, the distance over which diffusion occurs, and the solubility of the gas in the medium. A larger gradient, a larger surface area, and a shorter distance all increase the rate of diffusion. Different gases diffuse at different rates depending on their molecular size and solubility. This passive process does not require energy expenditure by the organism.
