Oxidedispersionstrengthened, often abbreviated as ODS, refers to a class of materials that derive their enhanced mechanical properties, particularly at high temperatures, from the presence of finely dispersed oxide particles within a metal matrix. These oxide particles act as obstacles to dislocation movement, significantly impeding plastic deformation and thus increasing the material's strength and creep resistance.

The development of ODS materials typically involves processes like mechanical alloying, where metal powders and oxide powders are repeatedly fractured and re-welded in a high-energy ball mill. This process results in a homogeneous distribution of sub-micron oxide particles within the metal matrix. Subsequent consolidation and processing steps, such as hot isostatic pressing and extrusion, form a solid material with the desired microstructure.

Common examples of ODS materials include iron-based alloys, such as ODS steels, and nickel-based superalloys. These materials find applications in demanding environments where high temperature strength and resistance to degradation are crucial, such as in nuclear reactor components, gas turbine engines, and aerospace structures. The effectiveness of ODS strengthening is highly dependent on the size, distribution, and volume fraction of the oxide particles, as well as the compatibility between the oxide and the metal matrix.
